Ironfall has a healthy dose of "Gears of War" in it, including the ability to hide between cover and a timing-based reload system as well. That being said, the controls work well overall. My recommendation is to turn up the sensitivity as high as you can for quicker aiming and less thumb swiping, though it honestly still feels a tad slow even then. I haven't played the game for three days as I write this, for example, and my thumb joint still feels a tad tender. On the other hand, it also can lead to soreness and fatigue with your thumb joint, especially once the action gets hot and hectic.

On one hand, it sort of approximates the mouse-based camera control that PC gamers are familiar with. As a result, the lower touchscreen served as my primary mode of control for the camera, which - pardon the pun - could be a bit hit or miss. Having reviewed it on an original 3DS with no Circle Pad Pro, for example, I had fewer control options due to the missing extra inputs provided by the new 3DS. While it adapts some familiar conventions, some of its little twists, like touchscreen implementation, can take some adjustment. Granted, it might take some folks a while to get used to it. For a game on the 3DS, the controls are surprisingly competent. Instead, it's the control scheme that will likely grab your attention when you start playing the game. Then you've got the voice acting, which sounds like it was done by someone like me. It's a tale that admittedly has been done many times and won't have you grabbing a Kleenex or pondering life's greatest questions. I'm telling you, aliens are nothing but trouble. Heavily borrowing from other games of shooters past, Ironfall tells the tale of a struggle against an alien force.
